The Rankings Observatory incorporates the new CWTS Leiden Ranking Open Edition

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University, in collaboration with the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI), Sesame Open Science and OurResearch, has launched the new Leiden Ranking Open Edition, based on open and reproducible data. 

The new ranking system is a pilot to test the capacity of data sources such as OpenAlex to deliver the coverage and quality of data required for these analyses. 

The Leiden Ranking Open Edition provides not only overall results but also rankings in the following fields: Biomedical and Health Sciences, Life and Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and Social Sciences and Humanities. The analysis is based on scientific output indicators, which are grouped into three main types: scientific impact, collaboration and open access. 

Published in January 2024, the 2023 edition of the ranking featured the UPC in outstanding positions on the global stage. For instance, the University is ranked twice among the world’s top 10: 7th overall in percentage of green open-access publications and 3rd in Mathematics and Computer Science for the same indicator. It is also listed among the world’s top 50 in 13 other classifications and is the top Spanish university in 20.
