The 2019 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy—also known as ARWU or the Shanghai Ranking—ranks the world’s 1,000 best universities by considering several indicators of research output, quality of education, quality of faculty and per capita performance—that is, the weighted scores of the indicators divided by the number of full-time equivalent teaching and research staff.
Based on these indicators, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) has been ranked in the 601-700 range, as it has been since 2017. It has taken third place among Spanish technical universities and fifth among Catalan universities. It has been ranked in the 18-21 range in Spain and in the 236-272 range in Europe.
More than 1,800 institutions have been analysed in this 2019 edition, which was published on 15 August. The Ranking uses the Clarivative Analytics Web of Science as a reference bibliographic database. It considers every university that has Nobel Laureates, Fields Medalists, Highly Cited Researchers or papers published in Nature or Science. It also includes universities with a significant number of papers indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) or the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI).
The UPC is among the world’s top 500, according to the CWUR
In the 2019-2020 edition of the CWUR - World University Rankings, published by the Center for World University Rankings in Saudi Arabia, the UPC ranks 443rd, among the world’s top 2.3%.
The CWUR’s rankings analyse around 20,000 universities and publish the results of the best 2,000, which means a thousand more than in the last edition. The indicators are used to evaluate universities on the quality of teaching, graduate employment, the quality of faculty and research output. Data is obtained from the Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics).
The UPC has taken 16th place in the SIR Iber ranking
The latest edition of the SIR Iber ranking, which was published in August, includes higher education institutions from Andorra, Spain, Portugal and Latin America. This year it analysed 1,761 Ibero-American universities. In this 2019 edition of the SIR Iber, the UPC remains in the same positions as in the last two years: it ranked 16th among Ibero-American universities, seventh in Spain and third in Catalonia. It also kept its leading position among Spanish technical universities.
Climbing positions in the Webometrics ranking
The second edition of the 2019 Ranking Web of Universities was published recently. Also known as Webometrics, this ranking classifies more than 12,000 higher education institutions around the world according to a series of indicators related mainly to the volume and visibility of their web pages but also to the impact and transparency of their research output. This ranking is published by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
In its latest edition, released in July, the UPC has climbed positions and moved from the 297th to the 275th place in the world and thus remained among the top 300 universities globally. The University has also climbed positions in Europe, moving from the 111th to the 100th place, and remained seventh in Spain, third in Catalonia and the leader among Spanish technical universities.
