The UPC, among the world’s top 100 in four subjects according to the 2022 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
The UPC maintains its position among the world’s 100 best universities in four subjects (Instruments Science and Technology, Atmospheric Science, Mathematics and Civil Engineering) and is the top Spanish university in two (Atmospheric Science and Water Resources) in the latest edition of the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

The 2022 edition of the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has been published. It lists the world’s top institutions in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. Institutions are analysed based on a maximum of five indicators, which are allocated different weights for different subjects and which focus on research, academic excellence, international collaboration and awards received by teaching and research staff.
In the latest edition of the ranking, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is listed among the world’s top 75 universities in Instruments Science and Technology (51-75 band) and among the world’s top 100 in Atmospheric Science, Mathematics and Civil Engineering. It also stands out in Water Resources, Transportation Science and Technology and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, in which it is listed among the world’s top 150.
In addition, the UPC is the top Spanish university in Atmospheric Science and Water Resources and shares the top position among Spanish universities in three subjects: Mathematics, Transportation Science and Technology and Telecommunication Engineering. The University also stands out in Civil Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, in which it ranks 2nd in Spain.
With regard to the indicators analysed by the ranking, the UPC has achieved the highest score in international collaboration (IC), which evaluates the ratio of papers with international co-authorship to the total number of publications by category. The University also stands out in category normalised citation impact (CNCI), which is the ratio of citations of papers published to the average citations of papers by category, period and type of journal publication.
