Reuter’s Top 100 is drawn up with the collaboration of Clarivate Analytics, which first identifies the more than 600 institutions worldwide that publish the majority of articles in its databases (the Web of Science). It shortens this list by excluding those that have fewer than 50 patents filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) during the period 2011 to 2016 and those that are not European.
It then evaluates the institutions taking into account ten variables focusing on scientific publications (basic research) and patents (applied research), and publishes the position of the top 100 based on a summary indicator.
The latest edition of the ranking includes 14 countries: Finland (new this year), Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Austria. The list is led by KU Leuven, Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
