The UPC continues to be the top Spanish technical university in the latest edition of the THE World University Rankings
In the Times Higher Education’s 2022 World University Rankings (THE WUR), the UPC maintains its position among the 800 best universities in the world (601-800 band) and continues to be the top Spanish technical university. In the THE WUR by Subject, the UPC is also the top Spanish technical university in Computer Science and Physical Sciences, and shares the first position in Engineering and Life Sciences.

In the latest edition of the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings (THE WUR), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is ranked among the 800 best universities in the world (601-800 band) and, considering institutions’ general results, it continues to be the top Spanish technical university. In this ranking, the University has achieved the maximum score in the indicators linked to international outlook, which includes the proportion of international staff, the proportion of international students and the proportion of international collaboration in publications. The UPC has obtained the best score in the latter.
In the rankings by subject, also known as THE WUR by Subject, the UPC is ranked as one of the 400 best universities in the world (301-400 band) in Computer Science and Life Sciences. In Physical Sciences, the University is among the world’s 500 best universities (401-500 band), and in Engineering it is among the top 600 universities (501-600 band). In Computer Science and Physical Sciences, the UPC continues to be the top Spanish technical university; in Engineering, it shares the first position with the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV); and in Life Sciences, it shares the first position with the UPV and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).
Additionally, regarding the THE WUR by Subject, the UPC has achieved the highest scores in the indicators linked to the impact of citations, international outlook and industry income.
THE WUR analyse a total of 1,661 higher education institutions around the world: for universities to be included, they must teach undergraduates and have a research output of more than 1,000 publications in Scopus between 2016 and 2020 (with a minimum of 150 a year). They can also be excluded if 80% or more of their research output is exclusively in one of 11 subject areas that are analysed in THE WUR by Subject. THE WUR use 13 indicators on five main areas: citations, teaching, industry income, international outlook and research. THE WUR by Subject use the same indicators but adjusting weightings according to each field.
