The UPC among the world’s top 25 in Architecture and the world’s top 35 in Civil and Structural Engineering according to the QS WUR by Subject
In the new edition of the QS Word University Rankings by Subject, the UPC is ranked the world’s 22nd in Architecture and Built Environment, and 35th in Civil and Structural Engineering. It is also Spain’s leader in both subjects. The ranking, which analyses indicators related to research and reputation, also features the University as the Spanish leader in the following subjects: Telecommunication, Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Computer Science and Information Systems; Statistics and Operational Research; Art and Design; and Materials Sciences.

In the 2023 edition of the QS Word University Rankings by Subject, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) is ranked in four broad subject areas and 16 disciplines. The UPC achieves its highest scores in seven subjects, having or sharing the top position among Spanish universities: Architecture and Built Environment (22nd in the world); Civil and Structural Engineering (35th); Telecommunication, Electrical and Electronic Engineering (58th); Computer Science and Information Systems (82nd); Statistics and Operational Research (51-100 band); and Art and Design and Materials Sciences (101-150 band and 1st-3rd in Spain).
The University is also listed among the world’s top 100 in Engineering and Technology (65th); Mineral and Mining Engineering (51-70 band); Industrial, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (81st); and Mathematics (100th). In these four subjects, it ranks 2nd in Spain.
The UPC is also listed in Chemical Engineering (151-200 band), Environmental Sciences (151-200 band), Physics and Astronomy (151-200 band), Earth and Marine Sciences (201-230 band), Natural Sciences (207th), Agriculture and Forestry (251-300 band), Arts and Humanities (310th), Business and Management Studies (401-450 band) and Social Sciences (451-500 band).
More than 1,500 institutions analysed in 58 broad subjects and disciplines
The 2023 edition of the QS Word University Rankings by Subject publishes the results of over 1,500 higher education institutions around the world. It ranks them for five broad subjects and 53 disciplines. The analysis is based on a range of indicators related to research and reputation: research citations per paper, h-index, international research network, academic reputation and employer reputation.
Based on the five indicators analysed, the UPC has achieved the highest scores in the following broad subject areas and disciplines:
- International research network in the discipline Computer Science, 97.7 out of 100.
- Research citations per paper in the discipline Environmental Sciences, 90.5 out of 100.
- Academic reputation in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology, 82.5 out of 100.
- H-index in the discipline Physics and Astronomy, 81.7 out of 100.
- Employer reputation in the discipline Architecture and Built Environment, 77.8 out of 100.
