The UPC, among the world’s top 20 in Architecture and the world’s top 50 in Civil and Structural Engineering and in Mining Engineering according to the QS WUR by Subject
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the UPC has been ranked among the world’s top 50 in Architecture and Built Environment, in Civil and Structural Engineering and in Mineral and Mining Engineering. In this last edition, the University is also among the top 100 in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology and in the disciplines Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Information Systems.

In the 2022 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject (QS WUR by Subject), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is ranked once again in four broad subject areas and 15 disciplines. Specifically, the UPC is ranked as one of the world’s top 20 universities in Architecture and Built Environment (19th, which is one place higher than in the 2021 edition), and one of the top 50 in Civil and Structural Engineering (29th) and, for the first time, in Mining and Mineral Engineering (49th). The University is also among the world’s top 100 in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology (60th) and in the following disciplines: Electrical and Electronic Engineering (52nd), Mechanical Engineering (78th) and Computer Science and Information Systems (86th).
Further UPC disciplines are listed in the rankings among the world’s top 150: Art and Design, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences and Statistics and Operational Research (101-150 band), and Mathematics (113rd). The University is also ranked in Physics and Astronomy (151-200 band), in the broad subject area Natural Sciences (182nd), in Agriculture and Forestry (251-300 band), in the broad subject areas Arts and Humanities (338th) and Social Sciences and Management (383rd), and in Business and Management Studies (351-400 band).
Top Spanish university in five disciplines
The UPC is the top Spanish university in Architecture and Built Environment, Computer Science and Information Systems, Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Materials Sciences. Additionally, it shares the top position in Environmental Sciences, Statistics and Operational Research and Art and Design.
More than 1,500 institutions analysed
The 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, are based on a range of indicators related to research (research citations per paper and H-index) and the institution’s reputation among academics at other institutions and among employers, with weightings adjusted according to the characteristics of each scientific area. The international research network (IRN) indicator has been included for the first time in this year’s ranking of broad subject areas. This indicator assesses the degree of diversity in terms of international collaboration in scientific publications.
Based on the five indicators analysed, the UPC has achieved the highest scores in the following broad subject areas and disciplines:
- Academic reputation in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology (84.5 out of 100).
- Employer reputation in Mechanical Engineering (80 out of 100).
- Research citations per paper in Physics and Astronomy (91.1 out of 100).
- H-index in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (82.6 out of 100).
- International research network (IRN) in the broad subject area Engineering and Technology (90 out of 100).
The ranking analyses the performance of 15,200 university programmes at 1,543 universities in 88 countries across the world and ranks universities in 51 academic disciplines, which are grouped into five broad subject areas.
