The UPC among the world’s best universities in Architecture, Civil Engineering and Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the QSWUR by Subject
In the 2021 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject (QSWUR by Subject), which was published on 3 March, the UPC is ranked the world’s 20th best university in Architecture and Built Environment, 29th in Civil and Structural Engineering and 46th in Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering. In the subject area Engineering and Technology, the University climbs from the world’s 76th best university in 2020 to the 67th this year and remains the top university in Spain.

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is listed in four subject areas and 15 subjects in the new edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject. In particular, the UPC stands out as the world’s 20th best university in Architecture and Built Environment, which is one place higher than in 2020, and 29th in Civil and Structural Engineering. The University is also ranked the world’s 46th in Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, climbing several positions from last year’s 51-100 band. The UPC cements its position as the leading Spanish university in these three subjects.
The rankings by subject rank the UPC 79th in the world and 1st in Spain in Computer Science and Information Systems, and 81st in Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering.
Additionally, the University is ranked as one of the world’s top 150 universities in four subjects: Art and Design, Environmental Studies, Statistics and Operational Research (101-150 band) and Mathematics (123rd). It is also ranked in the 151-200 band in Chemical Engineering, Earth and Marine Sciences and Materials Sciences. The UPC shares the top position among Spanish universities in Art and Design, Materials Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Statistics and Operational Research.
The UPC is also ranked in Physics and Astronomy, Agriculture and Forestry (in the 251-300 band for both subjects) and Business and Management Studies (301-350 band).

The UPC is ranked in four out of five subject areas of the ranking and stands out in Engineering and Technology, in which it climbs nine positions to the world’s 67th (it was ranked 76th in the 2020 edition), and is also the leader among Spanish universities.
The University is also listed in the subject areas Natural Sciences (275th), Arts and Humanities (353rd) and Social Sciences and Management (401-450 band).

The 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, analyses four indicators related to research impact (research citations per paper and h-index) and the institution’s reputation among academics at other institutions and among employers. The ranking analyses the results of 14,435 degree programmes at 1,452 universities in 86 countries around the world and ranks universities in 51 subjects and five broad subject areas.
