The UPC, among the world’s 500 best universities and the top 100 in four subjects
In the 2019 edition of the Taiwan Ranking, the UPC ranks among the world’s 500 best universities and 138th in the field of Engineering, in which it remains the leader among Spanish universities. The University is also listed among the world’s top 100 in four subjects: Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Computer Science.

On 10 October, the latest edition of the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities was published by the National Taiwan University, also known as the NTU or Taiwan Ranking. This ranking assesses universities’ scientific output in terms of productivity, research impact and research excellence, based on a group of bibliometric indicators (Web of Science) that combine short- and long-term results of several variables.
In the general classification of the ranking, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) ranks among the world’s 500 best universities (473rd) and remains the leader among Spanish technical universities. With regard to the ranking by field, the UPC has been ranked 138th in the world in the field of Engineering, in which it continues to be the best Spanish university since 2011, and in the 351–400 range in the field of Natural Sciences.
In addition, the University is among the world’s top 100 in four subjects: Mathematics (71st), Electrical Engineering (75th), Civil Engineering (76th) and Computer Science (89th). In the first three subjects, the UPC is rated as the top university in Spain.
Further UPC subjects are listed in the rankings: Mechanical Engineering (121st, sharing this position with the Universitat Politècnica de València), Chemical Engineering (154th), Materials Science (173rd and 1st in Spain), Geosciences (241st), Physics (in the 351–400 range) and Chemistry (in the 401–500 range).
