A timeline shows the most relevant milestones in the history of the University

The decree on the creation of the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona, the seed of the current UPC, was published in March 1971. With 9 campuses and 18 schools in 6 Catalan cities, the UPC today is one of the leading technical universities in Europe. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the University has published a website that contains a calendar of commemorative activities and a timeline and a photographic exhibition that show the most important milestones in these 50 years.

Within the framework of its 50th anniversary, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) has created the 50.upc.edu website with the aim of involving the university community in the celebration. As the rector of the UPC, Francesc Torres, points out in the presentation: “We aim to celebrate these first 50 years of history throughout the 2020-2021 academic year and we want everyone to take part. Therefore, we have first created this space for collecting your proposals relating to the programme of academic, cultural and social activities. We ask for your support and participation so that we can celebrate the University’s 50 years of history—our history—with a sense of pride and belonging.”

An extensive programme of activities
The website contains a calendar of activities to commemorate the University’s 50th anniversary, which are focused on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the 2030 agenda for fostering economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. Such activities include meetings, workshops, discussion forums, exhibitions, city walks, conferences and musical performances, among others. They will be held throughout the current academic year and will go on until December 2021. You can see all the activities and filter by organising school on the anniversary website.

The most relevant milestones in these 50 years
The history of the UPC goes back to March 1971, when the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona (UPB) was created. It initially comprised the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB), the Terrassa School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIT), the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and several research institutes. During the 70s and 80s of the last century, more schools became part of the University, which officially became the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1984. Today, the UPC has a network that includes 9 campuses and 18 schools in Barcelona, Manresa, Terrassa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Castelldefels and Vilanova i la Geltrú.

The 50th anniversary website contains a timeline that shows the most relevant milestones and allows you to take a journey through these 50 years of history. The website also features an exhibition of historical photographs, with snapshots of the schools’ most memorable moments, such as the visit of Albert Einstein, the first classes of industrial or informatics engineering, the creation of the Association of Friends of the UPC and the celebrations on the occasion of the University’s 25th anniversary.

The Contact section contains a form for submitting comments or suggestions regarding the activities to commemorate the UPC’s 50th anniversary.
