As part of the organisational protective measures for the COVID-19 pandemic that will be applied from the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year, and given the obligation to wear masks in University spaces, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) will begin to distribute, on 15 September, 40,000 reusable cloth masks aimed at students, teaching and research staff and administrative and service staff, as was done the previous academic year.
The face mask that will be provided this academic year is also reusable and made of a double water-repellent and anti-adherent fabric that is 65% polyester and 35% cotton, to which an improved antiviral and antibacterial treatment has been applied. The finish is made of paraffin and is hypoallergenic.
Available in four colours (purple, black, turquoise and green) while stocks last, students can pick the mask up at the libraries of their corresponding campuses or schools by identifying themselves with their UPC card or proof of enrolment on their mobile phone.
As for teaching staff and administrative staff, they can pick one up at the building receptions by presenting their UPC card.
Washing process
Spraying the mask with a TP2-type disinfectant or algaecide for textile use (of the type commonly used in homes and not intended for direct application on people or animals) and then washing it by hand is recommended.
Once it has been disinfected, it should be soaked in warm water with a neutral detergent to remove any chemical residues. Once it has been washed, it should be allowed to dry away from direct sunlight.
After each wash, it is important to iron it at 150°C on both sides.
This new face mask design, which, like the previous one, has been developed according to the quality and sustainability standards defined with the expert criteria of the Institute for Textile Research and Industrial Cooperation of Terrassa (INTEXTER) of the UPC.
At the end of their useful life, the masks can be deposited at the usual collection points of the UPC, just as those used until now are being collected.
