Innovative solutions for muscle injuries, autonomous driving and beach safety at MWC 2023
The UPC’s entrepreneurial spirit, at 4YFN
Concurrent with the MWC, the UPC is participating in Four Years From Now (4YFN), a platform promoting start-ups that takes place in the framework of the MWC. The UPC is, once again, the university that is presenting the most entrepreneurial initiatives, with the participation of thirty start-ups and spin-offs created by UPC students, alumni and researchers.
The UPC, through the Innovation and Technology Centre (CIT UPC), presents its technological capabilities and cutting-edge projects at MWC Barcelona 2023, which takes place from 27 February to 2 March. Its technology will be shown at the University’s stand in the Catalonia pavilion of the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via venue. At the same time, the UPC will be participating in 4YFN, the innovation ecosystem’s international meeting, which features over thirty technology-based spin-offs and start-ups led by UPC students, alumni and research staff.
Feb 23, 2023
The technology and innovation that the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) presents at MWC Barcelona 2023 is the result of the research carried out by research teams in various fields of application. The solutions shown range from an application to predict passenger occupancy in public road transport to a data anonymisation system for the mobility sector and an application to predict the means of transport used by citizens through deep learning techniques. A solution that allows the charge level of electric batteries to be optimised using state-of-the-art technologies is also presented, as well as a new pan-European learning ecosystem for improving the training of digital specialists in emerging fields such as AI, IoT and cybersecurity.
Through the UPC Innovation and Technology Centre (CIT UPC), the projects are on show at the University’s stand at Congress Square, booth 4, of the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Digital Catalonia pavilion in the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona (Av. Joan Carles I, 64, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat). Some of these initiatives have been presented as part of the second edition of the University’s The Radar call, which was organised to detect research groups’ technological projects in mobile technologies and related areas.

Other projects at the MWC are:
Virtual reality for neuromuscular injury rehabilitation
The Multimedia Applications and ICTs Laboratory (LAM) of the UPC presents Muvity at the MWC, a gamified virtual reality application for the rehabilitation of patients with chronic injuries. The system is designed to ensure patients do the rehabilitation exercises by playing games designed by therapists.
AI applied to autonomous vehicles to improve vision in fog
The Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6) of the UPC and the Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (IDEAI), through the Image Processing Group (GPI), have developed a solution applied to autonomous cars for the detection of obstacles in fog that improves driving safety.
IoT technology for monitoring the sea state and improving safety on beaches
The Technological Development Centre for Remote Acquisition and Data Processing Systems (SARTI) of the UPC leads the Douglas project with the company Ona Safe & Clean. This Internet of Things-based technology monitors the sea state and helps to improve the safety of bathing areas at beaches in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
Advanced wireless communication services
The LoRaMesher project, in which the UPC research group Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (CNDS) participates, consists of an advanced wireless communication service for interconnecting IoT applications that covers a greater distance and uses less energy than Wi-Fi.
Innovation in quantum technologies
Quantum technologies will also be present at the MWC, through the European Quantum Space, which is dedicated to showing the latest innovation and development in this field and is coordinated by the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO).
