Climate emergency in the spotlight of the 11th Barcelona International Biennial of Landscape held by the UPC’s ETSAB
From 27 September to 2 October a new edition of the Barcelona International Biennial of Landscape will take place. It will host the symposium ‘Canvi Climàtic, Altre Cop: Ciutat i Natura’ (Climate Change, Again: City and Nature).

It will host the symposium ‘Canvi Climàtic, Altre Cop: Ciutat i Natura’ (Climate Change, Again: City and Nature), which will reflect on the importance of landscape in climate change mitigation. The Rosa Barba International Landscape Award by the Fundación Banco Sabadell and the Landscape Schools International Award by the Fundación Banco Sabadell will also be presented.

The 11th Barcelona International Biennial of Landscape is held by the Official Association of Architects of Catalonia (COAC) and the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC). The event will take place online from 27 September to 2 October and will bring together landscape and architecture professionals and experts.
The symposium ‘Canvi Climàtic, Altre Cop: Ciutat i Natura’ (Climate Change, Again: City and Nature) will highlight the importance of landscape as a tool to tackle the climate emergency and will bring together eight renowned guests, who will discuss resources to face it:
- Martha Schwartz. Landscape architect, urban planner, climate activist and professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (USA).
- Colleen Mercer Clarke. Landscape architect and coastal ecologist.
- Karin Helms. Landscape architect, biologist and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Norway).
- Maguelonne Déjeant-Pons. Executive Secretary of the European Landscape Convention of the Council of Europe.
- Li Xiong. Professor and vice-president of the Beijing Forestry University (China) and member of the Chinese Committee of Experts on Landscape Architecture.
- Gilles Clément. Horticultural engineer, landscape architect, writer, gardener and professor at the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage (France).
Xavier Matilla, chief architect at the Barcelona City Council, and Ramon Torra, an architect and general manager of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, will also participate as institutional representatives.
The Biennial will also be attended by the authors of the 11 finalist landscape projects in the Rosa Barba International Landscape Award by the Fundación Banco Sabadell and the representatives of the 8 finalist schools in the Landscape Schools International Award by the Fundación Banco de Sabadell. In total, 43 speakers are expected to participate online for 30 hours.
Additionally, the catalogue book of the 10th International Biennial of Landscape, which was held in 2018, will be launched as part of the event. The Barcelona School of Architecture will host an exhibition of the finalists of both awards.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, this edition of the Biennial will be held online, except for the opening and closing ceremonies, which will be held at the COAC’s headquarters and at the Palau de la Música Catalana respectively. The Biennial is supported by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Fundación Banco Sabadell, the ISUF Conference, the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), IFLA Europe and the New European Bauhaus.
